Internship Journal

December 10th and 11th

This is all so new to me and just learning to work the system and the mic adjustment is my main worry right now. I always feel like I am either too high or too low on the mic and haven’t found a happy medium yet. It is fun, but I feel like I am terrible and too slow and leaving dead air space too much. First games always seem to be the worst my dad used to say. Got a couple wins which is always good.

December 17th and 18th

These games were really fun because both eagle teams got huge wins this weekend right in the midst of finals week and Christmas. It was a nice break for everyone to just come out and have some fun and watch some good basketball. I was a lot better this weekend and didn’t worry about the equipment as much and tried to incorporate my mistakes and things I had learned from the previous time into this game.

December 22nd

Wasn’t able to make this game because of family issues but I heard it was good and Al was very considerate of my hardships.

January 15, 2011

This game went pretty well, I was pretty nervous and don’t know all of the players very well yet, but I am excited to get better and for this upcoming season. Since it was such a fast paced game, it was hard to incorporate my personality or my basketball knowledge into the broadcast, but hopefully things will get better. At least we got the W!

February 4th and 5th

This weekend was busy having two games on Friday and Saturday. I still had some of my same struggles which is frustrating. I’m not sure if this is still something I would want to do as a career. I know everything that is going on in the game, but I can’t really watch it. I feel like it would be easier if I had another person as well. At least we got two more wins. Getting more comfortable with players names.

February 18th and 19th

It’s been awhile since I have done a game but this weekend actually went really well. Some struggles I was having before seemed to fade away and knowing all the players really helps. Asking the coaches before hand pronunciation of names and taking notes and live stats has really helped me to fill dead air space or timeouts. A little intimidated this weekend as another team’s announcers made the trip to Kirkland and sounded very, “official” but it’s good to have goals. Split the games this weekend, won 1 and lost 1.

Overall this was an amazing experience that I might not ever get to be a part of again. My supervisor was awesome. It was definitely a learning experience and I’m glad it wasn’t easy for me. It really showed me that if you work hard at something and stick with it, it could turn out to be something you really enjoy. I will definitely look to do more broadcasting of some kind in the future and thanks to this opportunity, I will be able to walk through so many more doors.
